Hi. I’m Marla. Gimme a Minute. No really, I’m only going to take a minute of your time. I want to talk to you about recycling.
Not paper or plastic. At least not this time. I’m talking about asking you to recycle your body. Imagine being able to save a life by sharing a vital resource that only your body can supply. Thousands of patients with leukemia and other life-threatening diseases depend on the Be The Match Registry. Be The Match Registry is the new name for the national organization operated by the National Marrow Donor Program. Be The Match offers people the unique opportunity to help a patient by donating bone marrow or umbilical cord blood.
For a patient’s body to accept these healthy cells, the patient needs a donor who is a close match. Seventy percent of patients do not have a donor in their family and depend on the Be The Match Registry to find an unrelated bone marrow donor or umbilical cord blood.
The “Be The Match” Registry is desperately trying to add potential donors to the national registry so that the 6000 patients searching daily for a marrow match, can hope for a lifesaving bone marrow transplant.
